About Foster Parenting PDF Print E-mail

Foster parenting is a fulfilling role – one that allows people to put their parenting skills to good use. It is big job that needs a support network.

IFCAA provides a variety of support and resources for foster parents in Indiana.  For those who are unfamiliar with foster parenting, foster parents are trained, licensed adults in our communities who:

  • Own or rent their own home or apartment
  • Are single or married
  • Have children, grown children, or are just beginning a family

Foster parents are important to helping children transition from difficult situations. They help the children and our community in the following ways:
  • Help children whom the courts have removed from their homes
  • Provide a service to their communities and/or counties that saves both lives and money
  • Foster with the intention of being permanent connections for children throughout their lives
  • Influence kids today to create a better future for individuals, families and communities
  • Give kids the opportunity to stay in familiar environments such as their schools

Foster parents fulfill their own lives by putting their natural parenting skills to good use.
The children under the guidance of foster parents are children who are separated from their families due to concerns about their personal health, safety and well being, or due to other circumstances. They include:
  • Children with medical needs
  • Children in need of emergency or respite care
  • Children with developmental or physical disabilities
  • Children with emotional challenges
  • School-aged children in need of help with social skills, academics or self-image
  • Children from a variety of ethnic, religious and/or cultural backgrounds
  • Teenagers in need of adult supervision
  • Siblings who need to stay together
