Mentor Programs

Mentor : a trusted counselor or guide

The Indiana Foster Care and Adoption Association believes that success and retention of good foster parents depends on the support they receive.  One way of providing support is through mentors.  In today’s business world companies have invested time and money in creating mentor programs to insure the success of their new and transitioning employees.  Hence, The Indiana Foster Care and Adoption Association is developing two mentor programs.

On-Line Volunteer Mentor Program

The first of IFCAA’s programs is the On-line Volunteer Mentor Program available to IFCAA members.  It is very unique in that it is the only mentor program available on-line and free.  Members may search mentor profiles to find foster or adoptive families with expertise in the areas they need advice. This allows you to connect on your time and across Indiana.

Foster to Foster Mentor Program

The Foster to Foster Mentor Program’s purpose is to ensure a positive, dependable, and knowledgeable gallery of support for newly licensed foster parents.  This program offers newly licensed foster parents an experienced foster parent mentor.  Parents typically call upon a large support network from their extended family, church, neighbors, and community organizations.  Due to the confidentiality requirements in the foster parent profession, foster parents can not always call on these typical networks.  The solution is to have an essential connection within their profession, another foster parent. By creating this crucial support there will be increased retention of foster parents as well as a decrease in placement disruptions.

                  Parent to Parent Mentor Program

The Parent to Parent Mentor Program is in the final stages of development.  This program will work just as the Foster to Foster Program does.  It will partner one adoptive family with a prospective and/or newly adoptive family for one year.  The goal is to provide support and knowledge to promote attachment and prevent disruptions.
